Out of My Mind and Into Our Schools: The Importance of Implementing Disabilities Inclusion

“Disabilities don’t hold students back… schools do.”

Thank you, Disney+’s new movie Out of My Mind, for showing exactly what Live Joyfully Education is here for...Easy-to-implement professional development for teachers centered on disabilities inclusion.

Just watch this scene here....

Teachers don’t need to be trained as special education teachers to understand the fundamentals of disabilities inclusion.

Teachers lead by example, right? They teach children more than facts—they show them how to treat the other students in the classroom.

If a teacher dismisses a child because he or she cannot speak, or purposely ignores that child with disabilities and treats them like a nuisance, what kind of message does that send to all the students? That teacher is inadvertently teaching the opposite of empathy when empathy is the key to becoming a more successful adult. (See our blog post about the evidence of empathy and success.)

To close the gap of ignorance and spread disabilities inclusion, teachers need to understand how to create a classroom environment centered on the principles of social-emotional learning and disabilities inclusion.

I’m a mom, much like Melody’s mom, who has seen the need for this understanding to begin in classrooms from an early age. That’s why I wrote the children’s book Joyfully Josie—to give parents and teachers a tool to help young children understand the importance of including children with disabilities.

Realizing that, like Mr. Dimming in the movie, teachers are not necessarily trained to foster an inclusive environment or to understand how to “handle” a student with differences, I assembled the Live Joyfully Education team. Together, we created tools for teachers to start the change themselves—right in their classrooms.

With LJE Professional Development courses, teachers can earn the continuing education credits they need while taking the much-needed steps to turn ignorance and exclusion into inclusion and understanding. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Implementing disability inclusion throughout school districts isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s a must-have.

How to Implement Live Joyfully Education Disability Inclusion into Your Schools:

  1. Professional Development Day In-Person Workshops - Bring an LJE educator to your district-wide professional development day to lead an in-person workshop. Teachers earn credits while learning the fundamentals of disability inclusion and social-emotional learning with breakout sessions and group work. (Book Here.)

  2. Train the Trainer - Since our team can’t be everywhere, we offer training for your district’s educators to lead the PD workshop themselves.

  3. Online PD Course for All Teachers - Share our LJE professional development online courses with all your teachers. They can take them at their own pace and earn credits. Schools can also purchase the courses in bulk to ensure participation. (Take Courses)

  4. Student Assemblies- Bring me—Josie’s mom and author of Joyfully Josie—into your school to share the book with students and answer questions. This has been the most rewarding experience, as students show that empathy is already in them—they just needed to understand a little better. (Book Here)

  5. Companion Book- Use Joyfully Josie in your lesson plans throughout the year. (Buy Here)

Take the lead in championing disabilities inclusion in your school.

It shouldn’t be up to the students with disabilities to make a school see how important it is, but we sure are grateful for Melody’s voice!
